History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it is said to have begun when Gyōki opened a Yakushi hall in Yōrō 5 (721). It later became the bettōji (managing temple) of Shirane Myōjin, and is said to have been rebuilt in Shōji 2 (1200) by the Yumoto clan, lords of Kusatsu. The official guide states that it became an imperial prayer temple in Bunmei 13.
