History and things to know
According to temple tradition, in Kangen 1 (1243) Jimyō Shōnin, who had served as jōza (senior monk) of Yakushi-ji in Shimotsuke, came to this place while traveling through the provinces and is said to have moved the temple to its present site. From the legend that clear water sprang up beneath an old pine, it took the name Matsuida-in, and this is said to be the origin of the place name Matsuida. In the Sengoku period it received temple lands from the Takeda clan, in the Edo period it was granted vermilion-seal lands by the third shogun, Iemitsu, and its Niō gate is said to have been built with the support of Tsunayoshi.
