History and things to know

According to the official history, a 首里大屋子 of Hirara, who was shipwrecked on his way back from delivering tribute to Shuri and returned eight years later, invited the deity of Naminoue-gū here in 1590 in gratitude. In Shōwa 15 the Gongen Hall was renamed Miyako Jinja and the 豊見親 were added as enshrined deities, and in Heisei 22 the kami were moved to the new shrine buildings at Nishizato 5-banchi.
