History and things to know
According to the temple's tradition, in Tenpyō 16 (744), Gyōki Bosatsu, on the orders of Emperor Shōmu, was guided by a dream to this place, received a statue of Shō Kannon here, and founded the temple. Its full complement of temple buildings was completed in Kenkyū 1, but they were burned in the fighting of the Sengoku period; the main hall was rebuilt in the Edo period, and the three-story pagoda was rebuilt in Tenpō 5. A tale of "the money of blessing" (rishō no zeni) also appears in Ihara Saikaku's Nippon Eitaigura.
