History and things to know

According to the official guide (in English), it is said to have been opened in the Heian period by the fourth son of Emperor Shirakawa, who became a monk and served as its first head priest. Two temples that originally stood at separate places on Kōyasan were combined in the Meiji period, after the great fire of 1888, and moved to the present site.
