History and things to know

According to the temple's engi (account of its origins), in Shuchō 1 (686) En no Ozunu founded it by imperial request of Empress Jitō and enshrined Kokūzō Bosatsu. Later Kūkai rebuilt its halls; after burning in a fire caused by lightning in Kyūan 4 it was restored, and in Keichō 14 Tokunaga Nagamasa rebuilt the main hall and other buildings. In the Edo period it was made a place of prayer for the Toda family, lords of the Ōgaki domain.
