History and things to know
According to the shrine's tradition, in the time of Emperor Keikō, Yamato Takeru no Mikoto received help from the kami when crossing the provincial border, and in thanks he left a sword on the Tengu Ridge of Mount Kokushi and enshrined the three kami; this was the beginning and is said to be today's Okumiya (inner shrine). Later En no Gyōja opened it as a training place for Shugendō, and in Yōrō 1 (717) the kami are said to have been invited from the Okumiya to the present site. The present main sanctuary was begun in Kaei 3 and completed in Meiji 10.
