History and things to know
According to the temple's record of its history, in the Nara period Gyōki is said to have carved a Senju Kannon from sacred wood obtained from the sea and installed it as the principal image. The official guide states that the Kannon hall, which serves as the main hall, fell in the great earthquake of Genroku 16 (1703) and was rebuilt between the Hōei and Shōtoku eras.
