History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, when the reclamation of Tsukiji after the Great Meireki Fire was troubled by waves, people found the shintai of Inari Ōkami floating and shining in the sea and enshrined it, and the wind and waves are said to have calmed. This was in Manji 2 (1659), and carrying lion heads (shishigashira) is said to be the origin of the festival. The present shrine building, from Shōwa 12, is in the shinmei-zukuri style.
