History and things to know

According to the betsuin's guide, it began in Bunroku 4 (1595) when Kyōnyo Shōnin opened Ōtani Hongan-ji at Watanabe in Ōsaka, and it moved to the present site in Keichō 3. Much was lost in the great Osaka air raid of Shōwa 20, but the principal image and the portrait were saved, and the main hall was restored in Shōwa 36.
