History and things to know

According to the temple's tradition, it began with a hall that people built when Dengyō Daishi Saichō, returning from Tang China, landed at the port of Hyōgo in Enryaku 24 (805). It flourished with the devotion of the Heike clan, and on its grounds is the Heishōkoku-byō, a mausoleum mourning Taira no Kiyomori. The first great buddha was given up for metal during the war and was rebuilt in Heisei 3 (1991).
