History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it began when Empress Jingū, on her way back from her expedition, designated this grove a sacred place and enshrined the kami of heaven and earth, and it is said that the place name Iizuka also comes from words of farewell spoken at that time. Its buildings were built in Enbun 4 (1359), and it became a prefectural shrine in Taishō 13.
