History and things to know

According to the temple's guide, it is said to have been founded in the Bunmei era, in the mid-Muromachi period, by 暁誉最勝, a leading disciple of the priest 超誉 of Jōfuku-ji. In the Edo period, at the time of the building of the Tōshōgū, a residence where Tokugawa Iemitsu stayed was built in its grounds, and in Ansei 3 (1856) the funeral of Ninomiya Sontoku was held at this temple.
