History and things to know
According to the shrine's tradition, it was founded in the Jōgan era (around 860) on the site of what is now the Honmaru (main enclosure) of Okayama Castle and was called Sakashita no Yashiro. When Ukita Naoie built Okayama Castle, he moved it to its present site and made it the guardian kami of the castle; later, after bearing the name Sakaori no Miya, it was renamed Okayama Jinja in Meiji 15. Much was lost in the Okayama air raid of Shōwa 20, but the Zuijin-mon gate escaped the fire and is an Important Cultural Property of Okayama City.
