History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it began when Enomoto Takeaki enshrined Emperor Kanmu, his distant ancestor, and the shrine is said to have been built when he received a sale of state land in Meiji 9. The rebuilding of the present shinmei-zukuri shrine building was planned in Taishō 15 and completed in Shōwa 16. The official guide states that the shrine site was formerly a place of ritual for the Ainu people.
