History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it was opened by the sage Hōdō Sennin in the Hakuchi era (653). In the Heian period it became a place of prayer for Emperor Kōkō and flourished as a temple associated with Emperor Uda (Kanpyō Hōō). In the siege of Miki Castle in Tenshō 6 (1578) it lost almost all its buildings, and in the Genroku era it changed from the Shingon school to the Sōtō school.
