History and things to know
According to the temple's guide, it began when Ganzan Daishi Ryōgen opened it to the south of Mount Funaoka in the Tengyō era (938–947). In Kangen 3 (1245) Kakuyu revived it and named it Rozan Tendai Kōji, and in the Tenshō era it moved to its present site. The present main hall and Sonpaiden were built in Kansei 6 (1794), when Emperor Kōkaku had part of the Sentō Imperial Palace moved here.
