History and things to know
According to the official guide, Shōkai-ji has been a place of prayer for those in power since the Heian period, and Ryūge-in has played its role as one of its sub-temples. It burned together with Shōkai-ji during Hashiba Hideyoshi's siege of Miki Castle in 1579, but was rebuilt at the beginning of the Edo period, and it is said to have survived even as many sub-temples were lost in the anti-Buddhist movement of the early Meiji era.
