History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it was founded in Tenshō 10 (1582; by another account 1587), and its founder is said to be 日山建慧, the tenth head of Kenshō-ji in Uragawara-ku, Jōetsu City. It is known for its ties with the 赤山義塾, a school held at the temple from the end of the Edo period until Meiji 3, and with the Meiji-era Zen master 星見天海.
