History and things to know
According to the temple's tradition, it was opened by Saichō in the Enryaku era; old documents record that while he was in retreat at Atsuta he received a message from a dragon kami, and when he chanted sutras beside a pond, Batō Kannon appeared. It lost its halls in the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute in Tenshō 12 and in a fire in Meiji 39, and the main hall was rebuilt in Meiji 44 using Keichō koban gold coins found in the ruins.
