History and things to know

According to the temple's tradition, it began in Tenshō 1 (1573) when the itinerant priest 叡雅, moved by a miraculous sign from a great cedar, built a hermitage, which was called Sugimoto-bō. In Bunroku 2 (1593) the priest visited again, built halls and renamed it 青龍山西光院伝福寺. It is said that a Yakushi Hall, a front gate and other buildings were also put in place in the Kan'ei era.
