History and things to know
According to the official guide, it began around Jōkyū 3 (1221), when Jōren Shōnin Gen'en, following a revelation in a dream, made a copy of the Nyorai of Zenkō-ji in Shinshū and enshrined it at 庶子山 in Matsuda. Hōjō Tokiyori is said to have donated estate lands, and after the wars the temple moved to Kaneko; in the Edo period, public showings (gokaichō) of the image began to be held in every Year of the Dragon.
