History and things to know
According to shrine tradition, Mizuno Katsunari carried with him even in battle the object of worship (goshintai) of Fushimi Inari Taisha that he had received from his grandfather, and the shrine originated when, on building Fukuyama Castle in Genna 5 (1619), he enshrined it as a guardian kami at the unlucky northeast direction (kimon) on the north side of the castle grounds. From then on, successive lords of Fukuyama Castle took charge of its rites.
