History and things to know

According to the shrine's history, it is said to have begun when a shōkonhi (memorial monument for the spirits of the dead) was erected and a Shinto-style memorial rite was performed to console the tondenhei (settler-soldiers) who died in the Seinan War of Meiji 10. In Shōwa 8 a shrine building was built on the present site and it became Sapporo Shōkonsha, and in Shōwa 14 it was renamed Sapporo Gokoku Jinja. The present shrine building was built in Shōwa 45.
