History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it began when Matsui Kangi Shōnin, from Kishū, came to Hokkaido aspiring to spread the teaching there, and in Meiji 8 (1875), with the support of believers, built a hall in Toyohira, a land only recently opened for settlement. It was the tenth Nichiren-shū temple in Hokkaido since Nichiji Shōnin's missionary work there, and the terakoya (temple school) that Kangi Shōnin opened was carried on by Toyohira Elementary School. The official guide states that it was later granted the title "Hokkai Minobu".
