History and things to know
According to the temple's tradition, it was founded in Ninpei 1 (1151) by Hemi Kiyomitsu as a Tendai temple named 信立寺, and after Kiyomitsu's death it was renamed Seikō-ji. In Bunmei 7 (1475) it invited 悦堂宗穆 Oshō of Kōin-ji in Kōfu as its founding priest and became a Sōtō temple. The main gate, the mountain gate and the main hall are said to have been built in the middle of the Edo period.
