Enshrined kami: Tokugawa Ieyasu

History and things to know

According to the official guide, in Genna 3 (1617) Ieyasu's coffin stopped at Kita-in on its way from Kunōzan to Nikkō, and after Tenkai held a memorial service, an image of Ieyasu was enshrined on that spot; this is said to be the beginning. It was moved to its present site in Kan'ei 10 (1633), and the shrine buildings rebuilt by order of Tokugawa Iemitsu after the great fire of Kan'ei 15 survive today.
