History and things to know

According to the temple's tradition, it was founded by the priest 宥阿, who died in Ōchō 1 (1311), and revived by the priest 乗秀, who died in Eiroku 2 (1559). The Meiji-era “Chishi Zairyōkō” contains a story that the temple began when a wealthy man's house on the shore of Kenaga Marsh was lost in a natural disaster, and the gohei (sacred paper wand) and the Amida Nyorai that remained were enshrined on the site of a sake brewery.
