History and things to know

According to the temple's tradition, it originated in the early Kan'ei era when a young priest who had been traveling through the provinces, Zen Master 一株祖典, began his practice and teaching at a hermitage in Katata called 法雲庵. Later he put the temple buildings in order and founded Shōfuku-ji; it is said that rather than becoming its founding priest himself, he invited his teacher, Zen Master 夾山東寛, to be the founder.
