History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it was opened in Shōchū 2 (1325) by Donkai Shōnin, the fourth Yugyō, with a donation from his elder brother, Matano Gorō Kagehira. Each time it lost its halls in repeated wars and fires it was restored, and in Kan'ei 8 (1631) the Edo shogunate recognized it as the head temple of the Ji school. The temple's guide says that the present principal image was moved in Genbun 2 (1737) from a sub-temple of Nichirin-ji in Asakusa.
