History and things to know

According to temple tradition, this site corresponds to the Seyakuin (dispensary) of the time when Prince Shōtoku built Shitennō-ji in the first year of Empress Suiko (593), and because the prince is said to have lectured on the Shōmangyō here, it came to be called Shōman-in. The tahōtō pagoda was rebuilt by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in Keichō 2 (1597), and the Kondō by Tokugawa Hidetada in Genna 4 (1618).

Introduced by this site, based on materials from the shrine or temple and public bodies.
