History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it was built in the Kanshō era of the Muromachi period as the family temple of the Date family on land in present-day Kōri-machi, Fukushima Prefecture, and by way of Marumori it moved to Renbō with the founding of Sendai. It burned in a fire in Meiji 3, and in Meiji 21 it absorbed its branch temple Chōsen-ji and moved to the present site. Its mountain gate is said to be a gate of the former Wakabayashi Castle, granted by the domain lord Tadamune.
