History and things to know

According to the official guide, it was opened in Chōwa 2 (1013) by Jakugen as a place for Tendai nenbutsu practice. When Hōnen expounded the teaching of the nenbutsu at the “Ōhara Debate” (Ōhara Mondō) in Bunji 2, the principal image is said to have emitted light, and from this it came to be called the “Shōko no Amida.” The present main hall was rebuilt in An'ei 7 (1778).
