History and things to know

According to temple tradition, when Minamoto no Yoritomo raised his army in Jishō 4 (1180), Sasaki Saburō Moritsuna built a fortified position here to gather troops; when he left, he built a small hall and installed his personal image of Yakushi Nyorai, and this was the beginning. At first it was called 守綱院. Its restoration was undertaken in the Tenshō era, and in Keian 2 (1649) it received a vermilion-seal grant (goshuin) from the shogunate. The present main hall was built in Keiō 1.
