History and things to know

According to the temple's engi, it began when Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, pacifying the Bōsō region in the time of Emperor Kanmu, built it to hold memorial rites for those who died in battle. It is said that 澄祐, the priest of the temple at the time, buried at the site of the execution ground the remains of Sōgorō, who was executed after appealing directly to the shogun to save the people of the Sakura domain; in Hōreki 2 (1752) the domain lord Hotta Masasuke bestowed on him the Buddhist name Sōgo Dōkan Koji.
