History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it was opened in Tenpyō Shōhō 6 (754) by 藤原廣政, the gōji (local official) of Ebina, who received a revelation in a dream from Aruka Myōjin, with Kokūzō Bosatsu as its principal image. Until the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the Meiji period it was the bettō temple of Aruka Jinja. Many of its buildings were lost to war fires and the Great Kantō Earthquake, and the present main hall was built in Heisei 6.
