History and things to know

According to the temple's guide, it began when a son of Fujiwara no Yorimichi, who built the Byōdōin in Uji, acted as patron and assembled statues of Amida Nyorai and the Twenty-Five Bodhisattvas on the bank opposite the Byōdōin. Escaping the anti-Buddhist movement of the Meiji era, the temple and its statues moved to the present site in Higashiyama. The statues are thought to be the joint work of the sculptor Jōchō and his disciples.
