History and things to know

According to the official guide, when Nobunaga built Azuchi Castle he moved the temple here from elsewhere and made it his own family temple. In a fire in 1854, at the end of the Edo period, everything burned except the Niō gate and the three-storied pagoda, both Important Cultural Properties; in the early Shōwa period part of a building of the Kyoto Imperial Palace was granted to the temple, and a temporary main hall was built on the site of Ieyasu's residence.
