History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, in Engi 1 (901), on his way to Dazaifu, Michizane is said to have rested on a small island by the Kantake River and admired the view of the bay; after his death a small shrine was built on that spot, which was the beginning. In the Edo period Ogasawara Tadazane, lord of the Kokura domain, repaired the shrine buildings and designated it a place of prayer for education, and in Meiji 13 the auxiliary shrines of the castle town were enshrined together here.
