History and things to know

The official guide begins with the birth of the land in the age of the gods recorded in the Kojiki, and says that from the Kamakura period to the Edo period the faith spread among samurai and common people. It introduces the tradition that Shunjōbō Chōgen was granted a longer life, and the tradition that in Tenshō 16 (1588) Toyotomi Hideyoshi offered rice while praying for his mother's recovery from illness, and that the Taikō Bridge and the Okushoin garden were built.
