History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it was opened in the Tenpyō era by Rōben of Tōdai-ji. In the Nanboku-chō period 乗弘 found a statue of Shō Kannon on a rock nearby and made it the principal image, and with the devotion of Ashikaga Takauji its buildings were arranged. After fires of war in the Tenshō era and a fire in Kansei 1, the main hall was rebuilt in Kansei 6.
