History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, its enshrinement is said to date either from the age of the kami or from the 11th year of Emperor Keikō; it is said that when Ōkuninushi no Ōkami opened up Hokuriku he enshrined a guardian kami, later also settled his own spirit here, and returned to Izumo. It was deeply revered by the imperial court, rising in divine rank from Junior Fifth Rank in Hōki 11 to Senior First Rank in Jishō 4, and it was ranked as a prefectural shrine in Meiji 6 and as a Kokuhei Shōsha in Taishō 12.
