History and things to know
According to shrine tradition, its original shrine is regarded as the Hachiman Jinja in Tsunobuchi, to which, in Kenkyū 6 (1195), Minamoto no Yoritomo had Adachi Morinaga bring a divided spirit from Tsurugaoka Hachimangū in Kamakura. In Keichō 15 (1610), on the completion of irrigation channels for new rice-field development, Ina Tadatsugu, the Kantō gundai, moved the main sanctuary from Tsunobuchi and enshrined it at the present site. The shrine received the patronage of the Sakai clan, lords of the Maebashi domain, and in Keian 2 (1649) it was granted 30 koku of vermilion-seal land (shuinchi) by Tokugawa Iemitsu.
