History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it was founded by Gyōki in Tenpyō 6 (734) and revived by Jikaku Daishi. In the Edo period it held vermilion-seal lands of twelve koku and served as bettō of Tamasaki Jinja. A document from Meiji 2 also records monks attending the shrine's festival, and the temple is said to have held the position of bettō for more than a thousand years from the mid-Heian period.
