History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, the kami of Tamatsushima have dwelt here since ancient times, and it is said that Empress Jingū, in return for the spiritual power of Wakahirume no Mikoto, enshrined a divided spirit in the land of Amano, and that she herself was later enshrined together. Sotōrihime no Mikoto was enshrined together by order of Emperor Kōkō, and with Emperor Shōmu's imperial visit and decree Akanoura no Mitama was also enshrined. The present main sanctuary was built in the Keichō era by Asano Yoshinaga and restored in Heisei 4.
