History and things to know
According to shrine tradition, because Prince Naka no Ōe and Nakatomi no Kamatari discussed their plan to overthrow Soga no Iruka on the hill behind the main sanctuary, Tōnomine came to be called "Katarai-yama" (the mountain of talks). It is said to have begun when, after Kamatari's death, his eldest son Jōe reburied part of his remains on the summit and built a thirteen-story pagoda and a lecture hall, and in Taihō 1 (701) set up a shrine hall and enshrined a sacred image.
