History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it was opened in 1766 when it received the Yakushi Nyorai of the Nishinomaru of Edo Castle (said to have been made by Chishō Daishi) and made it its principal image. It once faced the Tōkaidō and the south shore of Lake Biwa, but its surroundings changed with the landfill for the lakeshore road in the Shōwa 40s, and in Shōwa 59 its main hall, priests' quarters and shoin were built.
