History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it was opened around the Hōtoku era by the priest 麟巌 as 東川寺, but it later declined until it was all but abandoned. It is said that in the Kan'ei era the priest 水岸本滴 pacified a dragon of the land and was welcomed by the villagers, and that in Keian 1 temple buildings were erected on the site of the old temple and it was renamed Ryūtokusan Tōsen-ji.
