History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it was opened in Kanji 1 (1087) by the hōin Shōkaku of Daigo Sanbō-in, and in old times it was styled Yakuōzan Tōju-in. It lost its old documents and other records in fires, its main hall collapsed in the Great Kantō Earthquake, and after rebuilding it burned in the war, but it was rebuilt again in Shōwa 29. The principal image is said to have been protected by successive head priests.
