Enshrined kami: Emperor Saga, Sugawara no Michizane-kō

History and things to know

According to the shrine's tradition, it began when Emperor Saga stayed here for one night in Kōnin 13 (822), and later the 神野太神宮, enshrining the emperor, was built. The shrine's name is said to come from the story that Michizane-kō, on his way to Dazaifu, laid down a ship's rope and gazed at red plum blossoms, and from Shōryaku 4 (993) it came to be enshrined together with Umezuka Tenmangū.
